About the Exhibition
The Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography is pleased to announce Fred Brashear Jr’s While the Stars Look Down, which photographically depicts the alien like quality of a desert landscape captured under the veil of night. Creating imagery that both invokes cautious curiosity of the Mojave Desert’s biome while mysteriously presenting the endemic Joshua tree through the concepts of color and color theory, Brashear creates his imagery with the intention of stirring a visceral response.
With 8 years of documenting the Western Joshua tree and artistically contributing to the passage of the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act, protective legislature which California recently passed for the endemic species, Brashear has turned his attention to Joshua tree forests that exist on the fringes of the Mojave Desert in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, where the battle for survival amid the harshness of climate change and human encroachment is ever present.
