The Department of Art and Art History is very excited to present Studio Focus Part 1, an installation of student drawings from Art 140 Drawing, Materials and Techniques. This group of drawings is based on a large-scale portrait of the musician, Lou Reed painted by the artist, Chuck Close.
Keith Lord’s drawing class completed these value-saturated portraits using a projector resolution process. Students are presented with an out-of-focus image projected on the studio wall and begin drawing large areas of lights and darks. At timed intervals, the projection is incrementally focused. As the image becomes clearer, their drawings develop a volumetric structure. Close to the end of the drawing session, the projected portrait is dialed into sharp focus, and students draw final defining marks and essential details. This drawing method, where general values evolve into a realistic portrait, sharpens perceptual awareness and emphasizes light and shadow.
When viewing this exhibition one can enjoy the uniqueness of each drawing. Variations in contrast, gesture, and texture change the mood and temperament of the portraits. Stepping back and looking at several drawings at once, it seems as though the subtle differences from piece to piece allude to a myriad of possibilities and exponential creative outcomes.
The West Gallery is located on the second floor in the Abraham Campus Center at 2000 Second Street on the La Verne campus.
