Psychic Hearts

September 8-October 8, 2009

Psychic Hearts is a group exhibition of painters from Los Angeles and New York whose work blurs the distinction between memory and fiction inviting the exploration of altered realities.

On the rich painting surfaces by Max Presneill and Allison Schulnik images agitate and shift. Oozing with texture, Schulnik’s large saturated canvases present clownish hobos occupying chemically induced landscapes, while smaller works frame song titles with bold floral ornamentation. Working from photo sources and superimposing painterly layers, Presneill creates fractured compositions that integrate abstract processes with personal narratives.

Angela Dufresne and Kristine Moran’s painterly gestures activate the picture plane. Within Moran’s distorted interior spaces the balance between reality and fiction hinges on an emotional temperament. Dufresne’s vibrant landscapes, composed of rich tones and thin washes, radiate luminous color and dissolve into dreamy atmospheres.
