The Harris Art Gallery of The University of La Verne Department of Art and Art History presents an exhibition of work by Phillip K. Smith III including drawings and models of his public art projects. Mr. Smith has been selected as the artist and designer for a public art project at The University of La Verne funded by the Muriel Pollia Foundation. The Muriel Pollia Public Sculpture Garden will surround the Sara and Michael Abraham Campus Center, scheduled to open in 2009.
The artwork of Phillip K. Smith, III is inspired by the purity of geometry and the structure, growth, and patterning of nature. As a multi-disciplinary designer working within art, architecture, and design, he is interested in the power of scale, simplicity, and transformation.
Mr. Smith received a Bachelor of Architecture degree and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1996. He has worked for Machado + Silvetti Architects, Office dA, and Doug Dolezal Architects in Boston. He has also taught architecture design studios at the Boston Architectural Center and at Northeastern University, and has been invited as a guest critic for reviews at Cal Poly Pomona, The City University of New York, Harvard University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Southern California Institute or Architecture.
