Environmental Microbiology

Dr. Todd Lorenz is a Professor of Biology.

Description:

  • Phage Hunting in Uncharted Microbial Territories

Exploring new frontiers by isolating bacteriophages for microbes that have previously eluded phage discovery. Aiming to expand the phage library and understand microbial interactions in novel contexts.

  • Rhizosphere, Endosphere, and Phyllosphere Bacteria: A Treasure Trove of Potential

Isolating and characterizing bacteria from the rhizosphere, endosphere, and phyllosphere to unearth potential agricultural and pharmaceutical compounds, including antibiotics, antifungals, and chitinases.

  • Unveiling the Diversity of Bacterial Bioaerosols

Investigating the variety of dynamics of bacterial bioaerosols in the air, to assess their impact on environmental health and disease transmission.

Techniques used:

  • Sterile technique
  • Bacterial Isolation
  • Microscopy
  • Cloning
  • Sequencing

Student Requirements:

  • Independent student that is self motivated and hard working.
    • Interested in solving problems together
  • 1-2 students
